Become a volunteer and make a vital contribution, while developing your skills and supporting us.
Our volunteers make everyone feel welcome at the museum, preserving our historical and green spaces, and helping with our events and learning activities.
Volunteer roles can support all areas of museum life, from gardening and family days, to front-of-house, events and curatorial. You could assist at a Museum Late, support a facilitator with a family drumming activity, help in an archiving memory workshop, and much more.
We welcome anyone who wants to get involved. Most of our volunteer roles don’t require any special experience, qualifications or skills. As long as you’re enthusiastic and passionate, we’d love to have you on the team!
Volunteering should be fun! We want everyone to be able to learn new skills, meet new people and enjoy the volunteering that they do.
Flexible and varied time commitments
We know that not everyone can volunteer at the same time. Our roles cover varying time commitments – some can even be done from home.
No experience required
In most cases, no specific experience or qualifications are required to undertake a role – we are more interested in your passions and motivations.

For a micro role, where you may be volunteering for a day or two, we prefer an informal phone call to run through the details of the day.
It could be that we don’t offer a particular opportunity yet. You can always register interest in our roles and be added to our mailing list for future opportunities.Get in touch or sign up to our mailing list.
We recruit throughout the year, but not every role will recruit at the same time. Some roles will recruit across the year, whereas others will be once or twice a year. Micro roles can sometimes be one-offs, but we are likely to have similar roles return.
For all our roles, we enjoy working with friendly, enthusiastic, and motivated people. For a few roles we require some experience, but the vast majority of our roles do not require any previous experience.

Across the Museum, we have staff members who act as ‘Volunteer Supervisors’. These staff members will organise the activity you are supporting, and arrange your experience.
The Volunteer Manager is an additional person available to support volunteers, and also supports the Volunteer Supervisors across the Museum.
We want our roles to be as accessible as possible; when you make your application, you can declare a disability and we will discuss reasonable adjustments we can make.
In some cases, it may not be possible to adjust the role. In this instance, we will look at alternative roles that you could undertake.
